Solvent-based poly gives you that classic, rich amber tone that a lot of people associate with a beautiful timber floor. It deepens the natural colour of the wood and builds up a thick, warm finish that has real depth to it.
It's harder than waterbased, more resistant to chemicals and spills, and it has a longer track record. The tradeoff is longer dry times and a stronger odour during application — you'll want to be out of the house for 24-48 hours while it cures.
I still recommend solvent poly for certain jobs — dark timbers that benefit from the amber warmth, high-traffic commercial spaces, or clients who specifically want that traditional floor look.
